Jesus was way cool

What the hell was that? I remember the first time I heard King Missile. I had to buy a CD by them - like immediately... I guess "Jesus Was Way Cool" got me hooked. Their quirky lyrics and music is something else. Take "Gary and Melissa"; another favourite, that in some way is about explicit sexual behaviour, and on the other hand not, or... what is it about. What the hell was that? - like "Cheesecake Truck" a story that is as weird as it is plain daft, but still immensely intriguing.
Thanks to THE COMMERCIAL ZONE (download link) you can listen to Mystical Shit (indeed), and Fluting On The Hump from 1987. Read more on John S. Hall, the founder of King Missile. Please consider buying this CD as well - it is a classic!

It Makes A Fellow Proud To Be A Soldier

The heart of every man in our platoon must swell with pride,
For the nation's youth, the cream of which is marching at his side.
For the fascinating rules and regulations that we share,
And the quaint and curious costumes that we're called upon to wear.

Now Al joined up to do his part defending you and me.
He wants to fight and bleed and kill and die for liberty.
With the hell of war he's come to grips,
Policing up the filter tips,
It makes a fella proud to be a soldier!

When Pete was only in the seventh grade, he stabbed a cop.
He's real R.A. material and he was glad to swap
His switchblade and his old zip gun
For a bayonet and a new M-1.
It makes a fella proud to be a soldier!

After Johnny got through basic training, he
Was a soldier through and through when he was done.
It's effects were so well rooted,
That the next day he saluted
A Good Humor man, an usher, and a nun.

Now Fred's an intellectual, brings a book to every meal.
He likes the deep philosophers, like Norman Vincent Peale.
He thinks the army's just the thing,
Because he finds it broadening.
It makes a fella proud to be a soldier!

Now Ed flunked out of second grade, and never finished school.
He doesn't know a shelter half from an entrenching tool.
But he's going to be a big success.
He heads his class at OCS.
It makes a fella proud to be a soldier!

Our old mess sergeant's taste buds had been shot off in the war.
But his savory collations add to our esprit de corps.
To think of all the marvelous ways
They're using plastics nowadays.
It makes a fella proud to be a soldier!

Our lieutenant is the up-and-coming type.
Played with soldiers as a boy you just can bet.
It is written in the stars
He will get his captain's bars,
But he hasn't got enough box tops yet.

Our captain has a handicap to cope with, sad to tell.
He's from Georgia, and he doesn't speak the language very well.
He used to be, so rumor has, the Dean of Men at Alcatraz.
It makes a fella proud to be,
Why, as a kid I vowed to be,
What luck to be allowed to be
A soldier. (At ease!)

Tom Lehrer

Tom Lehrer could have been one of the musical giants of the '60s. He did most of his song writing in the 1950's and 60's, a time period Scheurer dubs the "new folk revival", and like other musicians of the day, Lehrer often had a message he wanted to bring to his audiences. In the mold of a political folk musician, his music was shunned by mass media; and a song of his was even once reprinted in Sing Out!magazine, a publication that a few years later would be one of the first to spread the songs of Bob Dylan. But quite unlike contemporaries such as Dylan and Phil Ochs, who rose to fame on the wings of the New Left, Lehrer's song writing career was stifled by the changes of that era. Continued here...

2½ hours vainly trying to persuade President George W Bush not to invade Iraq

The former American secretary of state Colin Powell has revealed that he spent 2½ hours vainly trying to persuade President George W Bush not to invade Iraq and believes today’s conflict cannot be resolved by US forces.

“I tried to avoid this war,” Powell said at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado. “I took him through the consequences of going into an Arab country and becoming the occupiers.”

Powell has become increasingly outspoken about the level of violence in Iraq, which he believes is in a state of civil war. “The civil war will ultimately be resolved by a test of arms,” he said. “It’s not going to be pretty to watch, but I don’t know any way to avoid it. It is happening now.”

He added: “It is not a civil war that can be put down or solved by the armed forces of the United States.” All the military could do, Powell suggested, was put “a heavier lid on this pot of boiling sectarian stew”.

Eric Idle reads Roald Dahl

Eric Idle was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003 (December 4) when the Recording Academy revealed nominations for the 46th Annual Grammy Awards. Eric's nomination was for Best Spoken Word Album For Children for his reading of Roald Dahl's famous children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Eric is of course very pleased and says that he was surprised when he heard the news.

Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-do
I have a perfect puzzle for you
Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-dee
If you are wise, you'll listen to me

What do you get when you guzzle down sweets?
Eating as much as an elephant eats
What are you at getting terribly fat?
What do you think will come of that?

I don't like the look of it

Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-da
If you're not greedy, you will go far
You will live in happiness too
Like the Oompa Loompa doom-pa-dee-do

Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-da-dee
If you are wise, you'll listen to me

Gum chewing's fine when it's once in a while
It stops you from smoking and brightens your smile
But it's repulsive, revolting, and wrong
Chewing and chewing all day long

The way that a cow does

Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-da
Given good manners, you will go far
You will live in happiness too
Like the Oompa Loompa doom-pa-dee-do

Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-dee
If you are wise, you'll listen to me

Who do you blame when your kid is a brat?
Pampered and spoiled like a Siamese cat
Blaming the kids is a lie and a shame
You know exactly who's to blame

The mother and the father

Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-da
If you're not spoiled, then you will go far
You will live in happiness too
Like the Oompa Loompa doom-pa-dee-do

I have another puzzle for you
Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-da-dee
If you are wise, you'll listen to me

What do you get from a glut of TV?
A pain in the neck and an IQ of three
Why don't you try simply reading a book?
Or can you just not bear to look?

You'll get no...you'll get no...you'll get no commercials

Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-da
If you're not greedy, you will go far
You will live in happiness too
Like the Oompa Oompa Loompa doom-pa-dee-do

Robert A. Heinlein - The Menace From Earth (audio)

First published in 1957. The "menace" of the title is a beautiful woman who visits the Moon and is assigned a young guide named Holly, a girl student and aspiring starship designer whose hobby is flying in a great cavern in the Moon, made possible because the gravity field is one sixth the strength of Earth's. Her best friend is Jeff, who appears enamored of the "groundhog" visitor. As Jeff spends more time with the visitor, Holly becomes jealous and begins to doubt Jeff's friendship.

This is one of Heinlein's few stories written from a female perspective.

Robert A. Heinlein - Farnham's Freehold (audio)

A serialised version, edited by Frederik Pohl, appeared in Worlds of If magazine (July, August, October 1964). The complete version was published in novel form by G.P. Putnam later in 1964.

Farnham's Freehold is a post-apocalyptic tale, as the setup for the story is a direct hit by a nuclear weapon, which sends a fallout shelter containing a man, his wife, son, daughter, daughter's friend, and black domestic servant into the future. Heinlein drew on his own experience in building a fallout shelter under his own house in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1950.

The book is popular with survivalist groups as it combines the civil engineering and physics of fallout shelter survival with the social dynamics of "lifeboat rules," or autocratic authority under extreme conditions, a theme further explored in depth in The Number of the Beast. To paraphrase Mr. Farnham, "How do you know who is the officer in the lifeboat? The one with the gun."

Robert A. Heinlein - Starship Troopers (audio)

Starship Troopers is a science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, first published (in abridged form) as a serial in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction (October, November 1959, as "Starship Soldier") and published hardcover in 1959.

The first-person narrative is about a young Filipino soldier named Juan "Johnny" Rico and his exploits in the Mobile Infantry, a futuristic military unit equipped with powered armor. Rico's military career progresses from recruit to non-commissioned officer and finally to officer against the backdrop of an interstellar war between mankind and an arachnoid species known as "the Bugs". Through Rico's eyes, Heinlein examines moral and philosophical aspects of suffrage, civic virtue, the necessities of war and capital punishment, and the nature of juvenile delinquency.

Starship Troopers won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1960 and helped create a different genre of literature known as military science fiction. It has been adapted into several films and games, most famously the 1997 film by Paul Verhoeven. The novel has attracted controversy and criticism for its social and political themes, which some critics believe are militaristic.

Robert A. Heinlein - Podkayne of Mars (audio)

Podkayne of Mars is a science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, originally serialised in Worlds of If (November 1962, January, March 1963), and published in hardcover in 1963. The novel is about a teenage girl named Podkayne "Poddy" Fries and her younger, asocial genius brother, Clark, who leave their home on Mars to take a trip on a spaceliner to see Earth, accompanied by their uncle.

This book, along with Starship Troopers, shows Heinlein uneasily evolving away from his old, comfortable territory of juvenile SF novels. Both books were written for a publisher expecting to market a juvenile SF novel, and both raised serious objections from the publisher.

Robert A. Heinlein - Have Spacesuit: Will Travel (audio)

Have Space Suit—Will Travel is a juvenile science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, originally serialised in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction (August, September, October 1958) and published by Scribner's in hardcover in 1958 as the last of the Heinlein juveniles. The title is a take-off of the title of a hit television show from the late 1950s and early 1960s, Have Gun — Will Travel, which in turn was a take-off on the 1954 memoir of Bob Hope, Have Tux, Will Travel. Robert A. Heinlein - Stranger In a Strange Land (audio)

The book was a breakthrough best-seller and eventual cult classic, attracting many readers who would not ordinarily have read a work of science fiction. Roswell theory revived by deathbed confession

EXACTLY 60 years ago, a light aircraft was flying over the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, at a height of around 3000m.

Suddenly, a brilliant flash of light illuminated the aircraft.

Visibility was good and as pilot Kenneth Arnold scanned the sky to find the source of the light, he saw a group of nine shiny metallic objects flying information.

He estimated their speed as being around 2600km/h - nearly three times faster than the top speed of any jet aircraft at the time.

Soon, similar reports began to come in from all over America.

This wasn't just the world's first UFO sighting, this was the birth of a phenomenon, one that still exercises an
extraordinary fascination. (continue reading The Sunday Telegraph)

The real queen of punk rock

(text taken from eternal flame) The Plasmatics, founded in 1978, rose to fame from sensational beginnings at CBGB's in New York City where Wendy and the band were known for fast aggressive music and on stage theatrics which included Wendy's regular chain-sawing of guitars and the detonation of speaker cabinets. After inking a record deal with Stiff records they rapidly grew to large venues where the "queen of shock rock," as she came to be known, expanded the theatrical repertoire to include blowing up cars on stage and collapsing lighting trusses. After having a show banned in London in 1979 the group retuned to New York, were helicoptered onto a New York pier where, in front of some 20,000 people after playing a short set, Wendy drove a cadillac into a stage loaded with explosives jumping out of the car seconds before it hit the stage and car and stage blew up. The band made numerous TV appearances inclubing two on Tom Snyder's "Tomorrow" Show where they also blew up a car in the studio. Among other things, the band is generally credited with bringing the mohawk haircut to rock'n roll. Wendy being the first high-profiled woman to wear a mohawk, and with her carefully shredded clothing was voted to People Magazine's Best Dressed List. She was also nominated for a grammy award as Best Female Rock Singer. The band, which in an early review Billboard magazine said "makes Kiss look like greasy kid stuff" toured from 1978 until 1988. Ironically, Gene Simmons of Kiss would later produce one of three Wendy O. Williams solo albums in 1982. Other notable pairings included a speed-metal cover of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" with lead singer for the UK's number one speed metal band Motorhead. [Dimmu Borghild note: Motorhead is NOT a speed metal band]

CT, Rod Swenson, who had been Wendy's significant other for more than twenty years, returned from shopping to the wooded area where the two had lived since moving to Connecticut from New York. He found a package that Wendy had left him with some special noodles he liked, a packet of seeds for growing garden greens, some oriental massage balm, and sealed letters from Wendy.
The suicide letters which included a "living will" denying life support, a love letter to Swenson, and various lists of things to do set Swenson searching the woods looking for her. After about an hour, and after it was almost dark, he found the body in woods near an area where she loved to feed the wildlife. Several nut shells were on a nearby rock where she had apparently been feeding some of the squirrels before she died. Swenson checked the body for a pulse, and there was none. A pistol lay on the ground nearby, and he returned to the house to call the local authorities. "Wendy's act was not an irrational in-the-moment act," he said, she had been talking about taking her own life for almost four years. She was at home in the peak of her career, but found the more ordinary 'hypocrisies of life' as she called them excruciatingly hard to deal with. In one sense she was the strongest person I have ever known, and in another, a side which most people never saw, the most vulnerable. She felt, in effect, she'd peaked and didn't care to live in a world in which she was uncomfortable, and below peak any longer. Speaking personally for myself, I loved her beyond imagination. She was a source of strength, inspiration, and courage. The pain at this moment in losing her is inexpressible. I can hardly imagine a world without Wendy Williams in it. For me such a world is profoundly diminished."

One of the suicide notes Wendy left read as follows:
"The act of taking my own life is not something I am doing without a lot of thought. I don't believe that people should take their own lives without deep and thoughtful reflection over a considerable period of time. I do believe strongly, however, that the right to do so is one of the most fundamental rights that anyone in a free society should have. For me much of the world makes no sense, but my feelings about what I am doing ring loud and clear to an inner ear and a place where there is no self, only calm. Love always, Wendy."

Wendy asked that no flowers be sent, but those who would like to make a donation in her memory can do so to: The Quiet Corner Wildlife Center, 109 Ashford Center Road, Ashford, CT 06276.

Thanks to Punk Not Profit, you can get the three Plasmatics albums "Meet The Plasmatics", "New Hope For The Wretched", "Metal Priestess" here.

Kola "a nuclear bomb"

The vast amount of radioactive waste that is the legacy of Russia's nuclear-powered submarines has been known to be a looming environmental disaster - now it can be far worse.

Research now indicates that the enormous tanks holding discarded submarine fuel rods in the Andreeva Bay may explode at any time, creating a nuclear nightmare for Northern Europe.

Norway and other Western authorities have argued for years that the stockpile of highly radioactive nuclear waste on the Kola peninsula poses an environmental hazard to the local population and for Norway. [continued here...]
