Erica Pomerance - You Used to Think

YOU USED TO THINK is one of those rarities of pure inspiration that rates up there with first platters by the MC5, Stooges, Fugs, Velvet Underground, Silver Apples, Godz, Pearls Before Swine, etc... a classic ‘68 underground album: a collage of fucked-up eastern ragas, jazz, and atonal folk rock, delivered in a beautiful, raspy, feverish, drug-induced howl, featuring the poetry and singular voice of Erica Pomerance. ESP produced more than its share of outsider visions and here was an album more like a situation, that peeked inside and outside the bullcrap of the music world and the various genres it endlessly pumps out.

Get it here.

Some time ago Swedish television SVT aired the documentary "Haack - the King of Techno" (Swedish txt). A stunning glimpse into the world of early computer/electronica. Lucky Swedes! Alas, Norwegian broadcasters still have a long way to go...

Bad News - See the film get the files

The excellent blog Milton Berle's Cock has provided us with this GREAT album by "Bad News". It deals with the intricate and delicate situations emerging within a modern rock band, and the music that they produce. Originally Bad News was part of some episodes by the brit comedy series "The Comic Strip". BN was famous for their physical comedy starring people known from shows such as "The Young Ones", "Bottom" and "Four men in a ..." Enjoy

Raymond Scott

«Raymond Scott was a very creative guy, but an absolute madman! When I first worked for him in the 1950s, he had built a sequencer with relays, motors, steppers and electronic circuits. I had-never-seen-anything-like it.»

The following two albums for download are for prelisten. I recommend that you take a look at and possibly buy something from BASTA-records who issued the «Manhattan Research Inc» It is a remarkable 2cd-set, and contains a nice large booklet - all compiled by mr. Irwin Chusid, author of "songs in the key of z" and a dj at WFMU... So, enjoy these two releases and catch a glimpse into the world of the first loops made without the use of magnetic tape. The «powerhouse» release is all radio sessions made between 1935-39, and is nothing like what Scott later became famous for - electronic music...

«It was the size of a football field! More than half a dozen big rooms, impeccably set-up. The floors were painted like a high class industrial laboratory. He had a whole room of metal-working equipment, a room full of wood-working equipment, and this huge barn of a room for electronics.»

Rock Snobs will become as obsolete as CDs

Washington Diarist - REMASTERED - by Michael Crowley
Since the dawn of rock, there have been individuals, usually young men, of argumentative tendencies who have lorded their encyclopedic musical knowledge over others." So states the introduction of the recent Rock Snob's Dictionary, compiled by David Kamp and Steven Daly. I like to believe I'm not the insufferable dweeb suggested by this definition. Certainly, much of the dictionary's obscure trivia (former Television bassist Richard Hell is now a novelist; Norwegian death metal stars actually murder one another) is news to me. But I do place an unusual, perhaps irrational, value on rock music. I take considerable pride in my huge collection and carefully refined taste. And I consider bad rock taste--or, worse, no rock taste at all--clear evidence of a fallow soul. I am, in other words, a certified Rock Snob. But I fear that Rock Snobs are in grave danger. We are being ruined by the iPod. Read the rest of the article here.

Quote: «Anarchist Retchcore collective United Cutlery offered us a hundred and fifty Euros to do a video for this track, which they told us was about monkeys and domestic violence. We reinterpreted it as a Betty Crocker morality tale. With fireballs. The one minute piece uses about 5s of source footage from a 1950's industrial film we found on archive.org.»

Bill Bailey - the bearded one...

If you haven't heard of Bill Bailey yet, I surely envy you. Because you've got so much to look forward to. He is a remarkable comedian with both stage acts including music, and who can forget - his "Manny" caracter in Black Books! Anywho, here are som BB quotes. The New York show in mp3's. More audio bits. And even more, from his Bewilderness CD. A video clip with BB and BB(Billy Bragg) doing Unisex Chip Shop at Glastonbury (good one!). And this "Chaucer Pubbe Gagge (YouTube)

A little lyric snippet - on the increased "whiny, self pitying" sound of American rock:

###
You pick me up from school
Attend all my sporting functions
Bought me a car
Gave me use of a credit card
But how can I feel pain?
How can I feel pain?
How can I feel pain
When you're being so supportive

We Feed the World, a film by Erwin Wagenhofer

WE FEED THE WORLD is a film about food and globalisation, fishermen and farmers, long-distance lorry drivers and high-powered corporate executives, the flow of goods and cash flow–a film about scarcity amid plenty. With its unforgettable images, the film provides insight into the production of our food and answers the question what world hunger has to do with us . See trailer.

The Twin Peaks Tapes of Agent Cooper are a riot! They are audio cassettes taken partly from the series and partly afterwards. They chronicle his time in Twin Peaks, including all kinds of extra material. Always addressed to "Diane" and always interesting. It's also out of print, but you can download the .mp3 file here(side 1) and here(side 2).

Amanda says: "This is loads of fun no matter what. Coop is da man. Don't care what anyone says."

Olga Marie Mikalsen - Olga Synger Solo

Outsider Music. Olga passed away in january 2006 at the age of 91. She was best known as a "lyrical alto", a "outsider musician" and a fan of Bartok. She made her debut at the age of 53 in 1968, and performed at Carnegie Hall. She cut an album sometime in the 70s - but due to bad distribution, it hardly sold at all... Which is a pity because she delivers the same vocal extravaganca as Florence Foster Jenkins, with the same gung-ho attitude as Elva Miller. The link is to a CD made by an advertising agency for a Norwegian soda - Solo, hence the name "Olga Synge Solo" [Olga Sings Solo], where she delivers as expected; highly lyrical... enjoy.

Came across loronix' site by accident - and have been there since... It has everything cool and swinging bossa you could imagine from the 50s - 60s and 70s. I am trying to give you some examples, but I advice you to go there yourself... What a great site - and the music is all "the hard to get" stuff.

Those pesky RAR files...

What is MacPAR deLuxe

MacPAR deLuxe is a utility program that runs on Mac OSX. It is useful to you if you upload and download binary files to and from Internet newsgroups.
It's main functions are:

  • Ensure error-free transport of the data by means of so called "par" and "par2" files;
  • Unpack data from a RAR archive (most of the files in newsgroups are compressed with rar);
  • Automatically start an external program (such as Stuffit Expander) to unpack downloaded files.

MacPAR deLuxe requires Mac OS X version 10.3.9 or better.

Girls In The Garage

From another excellent blog:
Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll

quote:
This very special volume of Girls In The Garage consists of some gems found in various junk and flea markets in Singapore. There must have been a big market in the '60s for cover bands. We suspect that these groups would have toured or had residencies in the big hotels of South-East Asia and had local hits of easternized versions of western songs. This package consists of some interesting, fun and hilarious lyrical content (incorrect gender references, a mix of English and Asian lyrics in the same song, bad translations) and some wild sounds (strange production, vocals that sound like they were processed through a wah-wah pedal). The cover art consists of full-color reproductions of the original, colorful and very interesting record sleeves! We guarantee that any fan of '60s music will be thoroughly entertained!

Bent, batty and 'bnoxious! (full album)

Elsebasto has among other things this great record on his blog. A great out-of-print 80’s compilation called Bent, batty and 'bnoxious! (zip no pw) This is one of the best compilations of psych/weird/rock/novelty you will find this year. Gems such as "Hippy In A Blunder" by Johnny Buckett, "My boyfriend's learning karate" by charlie & chan, and the really weird "Daddy frog" by Big daddy & the little sisters. It also has some strange movie trailers - somebody at Torture records really put their heart into this comp!

Why must they make music?

Nickelback, Coldplay and Sum41. These bands produce the most eclectic, avant garde, subversive, angry, profound, honest, heartfelt and serene music on the planet. They have to... Because of their popularity - it MUST have something to do with SOME quality measures. Not because they are signed to record labels who play it safe. Not because market analysts tell them what cords to play or what opinions to have. Sponsorships, royalties, merchandising, hit-lists - well, it is all great stuff! Listen to 2 songs by Nickelback split up into each stereo channel (mp3). It takes skills to play two different songs THAT alike - real craftmanship! Or listen to this splice made up by a Coldplay and Sum41(mp3). These guys are on the path to something great; each other!

Ferrante & Teicher - Dynamic Twin Pianos

Ferrante & Teicher made the album "Dynamic Twin Pianos" in 1960. It fits well into genres created by people like André Popp, Michel Magne and Dean Elliot. Here you'll find backwards tape and other popular fx from the early 60s. Another great album from Podsville. Download full zip here. Tracks are 128 kbps, but well worth a listen!

The owls are not what they seem...
The Great Gray Owl was first described by Johann Reinhold Forster in 1772. The name "nebulosa" is derived from the Latin "Nebulosus", meaning misty or foggy. The Great Gray Owl has also been called Great Gray Ghost, Phantom of the north, Cinerous Owl, Spectral Owl, Lapland Owl, Spruce Owl, Bearded Owl and Sooty Owl.
