In The Guetto

If you have overdone it; indulged in Sangria, Tapas and San Miguel - and you feel like your tummy is about to rip - well, listening to Il Principe Gitano's version of In The Ghetto will prove fatal. A singalong version with three simultaneous karaoke-styled lyrics can be found here. A static lyrics page here.

No more Loompanics...

(and it's already been a year...)
Anyone who's had the fortune of receiving the Loompanics catalog in the mail - share a common secret; the knowledge of the existence of unbelievable literature. I'm talking about that ol' non-fiction, DIY, paranormal, geeky, conspiracy, secret agent, spy-tech, mind altering, electronic, fraud, hacking, military, alternative -biology -lifeforms, home-made weapons of mass destruction and how to kill anybody with just about anything, thing... Most of which - highly illegal! But essential literature for any journalist, una-bomber, author, prankster, anarchist, housewife, lone gunman eh well remember the three nerds who assisted Mulder & Scully, and made a conspiracy weekly called "The Lone Gunmen", well those kinda guys... They're all into books such as The Art & Science of Dumpster Diving, Methods of Disguise, Making Crime Pay, Rancho Costa Nada: The Dirt Cheap Desert Homestead, If We Can Keep a Severed Head Alive…, How to Start Your Own Country, Did Jesus Exist?, Practical LSD Manufacture, Combat Knife Throwing, The $51 Fantasy, etc., etc.

Fear not, there will still be sources for unbelievable literature. R.I.P Lo0mpanics.

Lewis Black,

Lewis Black (wikipedia)

A good portion of Black's political material seems to be aimed at exposing both the comedy and tragedy of staunch conservatism, as well as disbelief at the mystifying combination of thick-headedness and condescending attitude in authority figures. Black seems just as disenchanted with Democrats as Republicans. He is quoted as saying: "You elected Bush, so that's who I'm going to rant about. If you elect Kerry, I'm going to rant about him too. My problem is with...authority!" He decided that the best way to find the next president is to "throw a dart at a map of the United States, go into the jungle, find a monkey, take it on a plane, parachute it out to the location the dart hit, and whoever the firs
t person the monkey touches, that is the new president." He is also quoted as saying "what is the difference between a Democrat and a Republican? A Democrat blows, and a Republican sucks" and "the only thing dumber than a Democrat or a Republican is when these two pricks work together." He has also stated that the way in which bipartisanship works is that "A Republican stands up and says, 'I got a really bad idea!' and then a Democrat stands up and says, '...and I can make it shittier!'"

Andreas Ammer & FM Einheit

FM Einheit is a member of the prestigious German band Einstürzende Neubauten, and his joint collaborations with playwriter Andreas Ammer has resulted in radio-plays, and soundscapes with various texts/lyrics with everything from Roald Amundsen's voyages to the last desperate cries from pilots in airplanes about to crash - accompanied with ambient and techno sounds. My first contact with these two artists was through the production "Deutsche Krieger" [German Warriors]. A CD cover with photos of Hitler, Kaiser Wilhelm and Ulrike Meinhof - well, I just HAD to buy it. Miss Meinhof's voice over 70s disco-beats, does it get any better? The last remaining member of the R.A.F (Rote Armee Fraktion - Baader Meinhof) still in prison (Brigitte Mohnhaupt) will be released the 27th of March this year. You can listen to a NPR radio program about R.A.F here (link). But I digress...

Thanks to the ever excellent Kill Ugly Radio, you can get Deutsche Krieger here. Original post here. More info here.

As my previous post surely made clear, Ubuweb has it all... It has some of the other fascinating Ammer/Einheit CD's.

From Ubuweb I would like to recommend Crashing Aeroplanes - the 1 hour radio play in German (but it has plenty with English as well) with loads of nifty sampling, and eerie "last words" from pilots.
It received several prizes, not at least for being a bold attempt to make entertainment out of the most sinister theme you can find; real audio - real death... Might be sickening to many people, it was at least to me!

Full mp3 here (53.37)

Go here to see the available Ammer/Einheit productions on ubuweb. If I dare to say, "Radio Inferno" is great. It was their first cooperation (1993) and is a "pop" version of Dante's Inferno. It features even the late John Peel as "The Radio".

Kurt Schwitters

Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948)

Born in Hanover, Germany, his studies in art were interrupted by WWI. In 1917, he painted his first abstract pictures and in 1918 saw the birth of his famous collage technique "Merz."

During these turbulent years of cultural development, Schwitters met and collaborated with other leading Dadaists such as Arp, Tzara
, Hausmann and others. On hearing Hausmann's sound poem "fmsbw"in 1921, he immediately recognized the great potential of Sound Poetry. With great logic and concentration, he built up a totally abstract piece, "Sonata in Urläten." Over the years, the Sonata grew in both size and variations, and realizing that some phonetic notation for the Sonata was essential if it was not to die with him, he finally published his notations as the last number of his Merz magazine in 1932.

According to Schwitters, merz is derived from the name of the Commerzbank; the word is also notably similar to the French word merde, which translated into English as "shit."

A story is told, but untrue, that he attempted to join the network of Dada artists, only to be rejected by the leader of the Berlin movement, Richard Huelsenbeck, on the premise that Schwitters was "too bourgeois" for Dada. A 2005 exposition on Dada at the Centre Georges Pompidou further acknowledged Schwitters as a member of the larger movement by devoting an entire section to the exhibition of some of his work (Ramade 2005).

Die Schwindlinge's version "Kurt Schwitters: What A Beauty/Die Ursonate/Und Andere Lautgedichte" can be found here (megaupload) Thanks to the excellent blog My Wife Of Sennacherib Is Radiosick Queen. Go there if you're into the avant garde, and like "nurse with wound", "whitehouse", "sun city girls", "merzbow" etc...

Even MORE Kurt Schwitters can be found at the superb Ubuweb (link), a place curated by Kenneth Goldsmith aka Kenny G (known from Wfmu)

Kurt Schwitters’ “Ursonate,” written between 1922 and 1932 was the greatest sound poem of the 20th century. Below the fold, you can find 9 versions of it by sound artists from around the world. Schwitters was primarily known for his Dadaist collages and visual art works, but some feel that the “Ursonate” is the most important and significantly influential work he made. His own legendary recording of his work was lost for years. It finally turned up in an attic in Holland the late ‘80s.

Tomita - Snowflakes are dancing

The source for a thousand sound effects used in radio, snippets in-betweenies, and for general amusements. Snowflakes are dancing contains some of the most prominent renditions of classical music. It is funny, innovative, moogie and did receive great reviews when it was released in 1974. Using a mountain of Moog's finest technology, Tomita turns the familiar impressionist melodies into a futuristic world, with synthesisers and alien voices aplenty. Even people who didn't like synthesizer-music thought this one was an exception. It truly is a gem, and probably the best of Tomita's vast production. Thanks to ABC Radio Nights for providing this prize! RS-link. !!!LINK DEAD!!!
